Overview
Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (HPPCL) was incorporated in December 2006 under the Companies Act 1956, with the objective to plan, promote, and organize the development of power generation on behalf of the Government of Himachal Pradesh (GoHP).
Presently, there are 18 Hydro Electric Projects allotted by the GoHP for development under the State Sector to HPPCL with an aggregate installed capacity of 5,093 MW. HPPCL has also been nominated as the Nodal Agency for the development of the Kishau Multipurpose Project (422 MW), a project of national importance to be executed through a joint venture between the Government of Himachal Pradesh and the Government of Uttarakhand. Himachal Pradesh has a 50% share in the project, thereby making the total allotted potential as 5,304 MW.
HPPCL has successfully commissioned a total capacity of 328 MW, comprising 276 MW of Hydro Power—across Kashang HEP Stage-I (65 MW), Sainj HEP (100 MW), and Sawra Kuddu HEP (111 MW)—alongwith 52 MW of solar capacity, which includes Pekhubella SPP (32 MW)—the largest solar power project in the State—implemented with financial assistance from the World Bank.
Presently HPPCL has four Hydro Electric Projects under construction with a cumulative capacity of 668 MW of which Shongtong Karcham HEP 450 MW is in advance stage. Further, HPPCL has also commenced the construction work of Diversion Tunnel of 148 m high Renukaji Dam Project, a project of National Importance. In addition to this 4360 MW of Hydro Electric projects are under various stages of implementation.
HPPCL is the key player in realizing the GoHP’s objective of becoming first green state of the Country. In furtherance of this objective the HPPCL been given a target of installing 500MW solar capacity. As such, HPPCL is in the process of executing 3 No. Solar Power projects aggregating to 31 MW(Gondpur Bulla, Lamlehri Uparli, and Bada Basot), 49 MW capacity solar projects are under tendering stage and preparation of the DPR for a 200 MW Solar Power Project at Damtal, District Kangra is in process.
In other Renewable Energy Projects HPPCL in collaboration with Oil India Limited has initiated the work for establishment of 1 MW Green Hydrogen plant (on pilot basis). The work was awarded on 09.09.2024 and presently its execution is in final stages.
HPPCL is also establishing Compressed Bio Gas (CBG) plant of 2 Tons/ day capacity. The DPR is being finalized.
HPPCL is working on bundling/ Hybridisation of Hydro with other Variable Renewable Energy (VRE) sources like solar/wind, so that revenue maximization from its hydro and solar is ensured and future energy challenges and energy transition is tapped for advantage of HPPCL & State. This project is being taken up under the "Himachal Pradesh Power Sector Development Program" (HPPSDP) of World Bank and 43.5 MW of power from the Sainj HEP shall be utilized for bundled product as pilot project. The purpose is to create a "round the clock" (RTC) bundle of renewable energy (RE) sources such as solar, wind, biomass, BESS etc., with hydro, acting as a pivot. If this pilot project succeeds, HPPCL will deploy this strategy for power sale from its other projects also. M/s Power Trading Corporation India Ltd. has been engaged as power trader during Jan, 2026.
As such HPPCL is emerging as the premier power generator company of the State and finding recognition amongst other such Central Public Sector Undertakings.
